Domain Registration – Protecting Your Domain Name

Your domain name’s settings control many of its uses from your email to accessibility to your website. Here are some tips to help you prevent unauthorized changes to your domain name’s settings.

We offer cheap domain registration, cheap domain hosting and domain transfer, domain renewal services with 24/7 customer supports.

Correct Registration

Keep your domain name’s contact information current. A domain name is like a car – the name on the title determines who registered it, not the person who paid for it. In the domain name world, the Whois database contact information is the title. Make sure:

  • You enter correct and valid information in the registrant, administrative, technical, and billing contact fields.
  • The listed registrant is the exact person or entity you want to have legal rights over the domain name.
  • You have a valid business license for the listed company and a government-issued photo ID for the person listed as the registrant. That way, if you do lose access to your account or domain name, you can validate registration of the domain name in the future.

Administrative Email Address

The administrative contact email address has the authority to approve a transfer of the domain name to another registrar. Do not allow the email address to become outdated or expire because this allows someone else to sign up for the email address, providing easy access to the account and domain name.

Login Regularly

Be vigilant: Regularly log in to your customer account and make sure your account and domain name contacts are correct. To help keep track of your domain name, you might consider purchasing Domain Monitoring. This service alerts you via email when your domain name’s settings change.

Lock Your Domain Name

To prevent unauthorized transfers to another registrar, lock your domain name from within your account. To help prevent your domain name from being moved out of your account, consider purchasing Protected Registration. Your domain name can be upgraded to add this enhancement. See Add Protected Registration to my domains for more information.

Secure Email

Keeping your email secure is key to keeping your domain name safe. Remember the following:

  • Use a secure email address. Free email accounts might be easy targets for unauthorized access.
  • Create your password using a complex series of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Change your password frequently to deter possible hackers intending to steal your domain name.

Antivirus/Spyware

To prevent key-logging software from capturing your user names and passwords and delivering your information to unauthorized persons, install antivirus/spyware software. Update your antivirus/spyware software periodically.

Be a Human Firewall

DO NOT give your customer account login, password, credit card, or shopper PIN information to anyone, including your webmaster. Webmasters NEVER need direct access to your domain name. They need access to your hosting account login and password. Use the Account Administrator feature of your account to grant access levels to others who need to manage domain names in your account. Managing Domain Name Account Administrators explains the assignment process.

Create Strong Passwords – Domain Registration

A password is your first and last line of defense in computer security. Typically people choose bad passwords because they are easy to remember. However, you wouldn’t leave the door to your home unlocked because it is too much of a hassle to unlock it before you open the door, would you? A weak password is the same thing.

We offer cheap domain registration, cheap domain hosting and domain transfer, domain renewal services with 24/7 customer supports.

Using words that appear in a dictionary, in any language, make cracking your password that much easier. Adding numbers to dictionary words doesn’t increase the password’s strength at all if it is based on a dictionary word. Even with character replacements like capital letters and non-alphanumeric symbols, you’re not getting a stronger password.

A true strong password should consist of 8 or more characters and be part of a “passphrase”. A passphrase consists of a phrase that has special meaning to you, therefore making it easier to remember. For example:

Mickey Mouse for President. It would be awesome!

One simple approach to create a better password is to take the first letter of each word in your passphrase, giving you:

mmfpiwba

That looks seemingly random, and it’s a fairly hard password to crack. But why not make it harder by using the punctuation from the sentence?

mmfp.iwba!

Now that is a much harder password to crack. Why stop there, though? Let’s make it even stronger by capitalizing some letters and adding numbers.

MM4P.Iwba!

Now you have truly difficult password to crack; but is still fairly easy to remember. To make it even stronger, you can salt it with non-alphanumeric character replacements for greater difficulty. For example, replacing an “a” with a “@” leaving you with:

MM4P.Iwb@!

Our shared hosting accounts do not allow the following symbols to be used in the password (second symbol is a space):

? ^'”:\&><~;`*)(_-=+|[]{}.,/

The following symbols are acceptable:

!@#%$

Do’s and Do Not’s of Password Security:

Do:

  • Combine letters, symbols, and numbers that are easy for you to remember and hard for someone else to guess.
  • Create pronounceable passwords (even if they are not words) that are easier to remember, reducing the temptation to write down your password.
  • Try using the initial letters of a phrase you love, especially if a number or special character is included.
  • Take two familiar things, and then wrap them around a number or special character. Alternatively, change the spelling to include a special character.

Do not:

  • Use personal information such as derivatives of your user ID, names of family members, maiden names, cars, license plates, telephone numbers, pets, birthdays, social security numbers, addresses, or hobbies.
  • Use any word in any language spelled forward or backward.
  • Tie passwords to the month. For example, don’t use “Mayday” in May.
  • Create new passwords that are substantially similar to ones you’ve previously used.

No password is 100% secure. You still must take basic security precautions such as not sharing your password with others, changing it frequently and changing it immediately if you believe it may have been compromised.

Enable Two-Step Verification – Domain Registration

You can increase your account’s security by using two-step verification. When you enable verification, every time you perform a high-risk task (like changing your username) we will text you a code you must enter. You can also choose to require the code every time you log in to your account.

Domain Registration – What is Protected Registration?

Protected Registration is a premium service you can apply to many of the domain names you purchase or already registered with us. The service helps ensure that you retain registration of your domain name, regardless of expiration dates or attempts to transfer.

We offer full list of top level domains with cheap domains sales.

Domain names with protected registration will automatically renew. The renewal settings cannot be changed and the service cannot be canceled without the listed registrant submitting documentation.

With Protected Registration, you receive:

  • Domain Name Ownership Protection — Protects you from losing your domain name if you forget to renew it, or if we can’t charge your credit card. If you fail to renew your domain name, we hold it for up to one year. During that time, your domain name is in an inactive, protected status with a parked page. We do not keep your related services running if your domain name renewal lapses. To rescue the domain name during the protected status period, you must pay any renewal fees for your domain name and Protected Registration.
  • Deadbolt Transfer Protection — Puts your domain name on lockdown, making it impossible for any inadvertent, accidental, or malicious transfer. Unlike regular domain name locking, which occurs at the registry level, Deadbolt Transfer Protection offers an even higher level of security — we lock your domain name in your account.
  • Ownership Protection Reports — Domain name status report and updates within your account to help you keep track of vital domain name information.

Before you purchase Protected Registration, ensure that the registrant contact for your domain name has a valid email address in the Whois database. You must have access to the registrant email address to make future changes to your domain name or Protected Registration service. For more information.

Protected Registration is not available for some domain names. These are primarily country-code extensions (ccTLDs).
