Domain Registration and “How much is my Domain Name worth?”

The value of a domain registration could be based on many criteria to value it and it could be change from time to time. We would like to point out 4 main  criteria that we think that they are the key value to valuate the domain.

Characters – The shorter the better!
There is no doubt about it. Short names are better than long names. They are generally easier to remember, spell, and are more impactful.

Ultimately, the value of a Domain Name is driven by its ability to deliver traffic and revenue to a business (good keyword domain). This determines how much a company would pay for a Domain Name. The size of the business opportunity most apparent for the name drives the value. For example, is more valuable than Names that are simple, very well-known phrases or words without an obvious business use are also valuable since these can be easily branded. An example of such a name is

Names with potential trademark issues are generally worthless. People who spend good money on names that are the trademark of a company are wasting their time and money because these companies are going after these owners. They must do this under most countries’ trademark rules or they risk losing their trademarks. Think about that before you register in a new registry.

Names that are variants or related to the most used version of the name in commerce are also diminished in value. For example, is more valuable than and is more valuable than

.Com domain
Many people want to live in exclusive Beverly Hills, New York City, Paris, Singapore or Hong Kong. That’s what drives up value. On the Internet, everyone wants to live in the .Com neighborhood. It’s the exclusive top level domain that says “I’ve been in this business a long time, I am a serious player, and I know what I’m doing.” It’s the instant branding that drives up the value, pure and simple, because all the other top-level domains generally work just as well.

Think about it, get a great idea and do it! A cheap domain registration today could make a million tomorrow!

Other ccTLDs, like the ccTLD .it representing Italy, allow anyone to register them, but require a trustee service if the registrant is not located in a specified country or region. Finally, there are ccTLDs that can be registered by anyone — .co representing Colombia, for example, has no residency requirements at all.

What Are Top-level domains (TLD)?

A top-level domain (TLD) is the part of the domain name located to the right of the dot (” . “). The most common TLDs are .com, .net, and .org. Some others are .biz, .info, and .ws. These common TLDs all have certain guidelines, but are generally available to any registrant, anywhere in the world.

There are also restricted top-level domains (rTLDs), like .aero, .biz, .edu, .mil, .museum, .name, and .pro, that require the registrant to represent a certain type of entity, or to belong to a certain community. For example, the .name TLD is reserved for individuals, and .edu is reserved for educational entities.

Domain Registration – Nameserver Rules for .IT Domains

Nameserver requirements

Nameserver features Details
IPv4 Supported
IPv6 Not supported
DNSSEC Not supported
Minimum # of nameservers 2
Maximum # of nameservers 6

All .it domain names must have two to six authoritative nameservers. Before you register or update the domain name, you must list all of these nameservers – including any 3rd party nameservers – in its zone file. Additionally, all IP addresses on the nameservers created do need to be unique IP addresses. If all nameservers are not listed, the domain name will fail the registry check.

If you want to register a .it domain name with us and use our nameservers, we handle this process for you.

If you want to use your own nameservers, you must set them up before you register or update the domain name. You must also ensure that they are resolving properly before you assign them to the domain name in our system.

TIP: You can use a DNS validation tool to ensure that your nameservers are resolving properly. If you do not have a preferred DNS validator, you can use any search engine to find one.

For example, if you want to register and use the and, then you must list those nameservers in the domain name’s zone file.

After you set up your nameservers and register or update your domain name, use the instructions in Change nameservers for my domains to set the nameservers in our system. Then, the registry must approve or reject them, which can take up to five business days.

Domains are not activated until the domain’s nameservers are successfully checked by the registry.

Nameservers for a .IT domain registration must be correctly configured before the registration request succeeds, otherwise registration will fail. Please check that the following requirements are met:

  • There must be at least 2 authoritative nameservers for the domain name, and they must correspond exactly to those found in the registration of the domain name
  • The IP addresses of hosts in the registration of the domain name must correspond to those actually associated with them in the DNS
  • The domain name cannot be associated with a CNAME record
  • The name of the nameserver specified in the SOA record for the domain name cannot be a CNAME
  • The names of the authoritative nameservers for the domain name cannot be CNAMEs
  • If there is an MX registration it cannot be associated with a CNAME
  • All hosts in the registration must be authoritative for the domain name registered
