Domain Registration – Business Registration FAQ

Domain Registration – How does Business Domain Registration affect Private Domain Registration?

Business Domain Registration works in conjunction with Private Domain Registration (also known as privacy) to keep your personal information private while promoting your business.

Private Domain Registration shields your personal contact information, which is separate from your Business Domain Registration information. Business Domain Registration contains only the information you want to make public, such as business hours, office phone numbers, and fax numbers.

If you want to have both types of domain registration, you must purchase them separately.

Can I have an Online Business Card and website for the same domain name?

No. A domain name can only host one website at a time. An Online Business Card is a mini website. If you activate an Online Business Card, visitors cannot navigate to your domain name’s existing website. For that reason, we recommend that you do not activate an Online Business Card for a domain name that already has an active website.

What is an Online Business Card?

In your domain name’s Business Registration account, you can create a one-page website for your business with our Online Business Card template.

Why isn’t my Online Business Card active yet?

If you created your Online Business Card more than 24 hours ago and it is not yet active, your nameservers might have be incorrect or you might have set your domain name to forward. Verify that your nameservers are pointed to our parking nameservers and that the domain name is not forwarded.

What is the Whois domain database?

The Whois database is an online repository of information associated with registered domain names. It stores and publicly displays domain name information, such creation and expiration dates, the registrar of record, and its various contacts (registrant, billing, administrative, and technical).

When you register a domain name, we collect this information, per the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) regulations for domain name registrars. The information in the Whois database is available to anyone who does a Whois search for a particular domain name. You must enter valid information in your account. If you do not, you risk losing your domain name registration.

Domain registration can be up to 63 characters, and can contain letters (a to z), numbers (0 to 9), and hyphens (except as the first or last characters of the domain name). You cannot register domain names with special characters such as & and #.

CIRA periodically audits domain names to ensure they conform to eligibility requirements. If CIRA cannot confirm the new registrant’s eligibility status, CIRA might request information from you to prove your eligibility. You must send them the requested information within the specified time frame to avoid deactivation of your .ca domain names.

Who can register .ca domains?

See Registering a .CA domain for details about who can register .ca domains and how.

Transfer Exceptions
  • When a domain transfer takes place, it must be initiated for every variant (IDN) of that .ca domain name. If all variants are not transferred, the transfer will fail.
  • On the Pending Transfers page in the Domain Manager, your administrative contact’s email address displays as nocontactsfound@secureserver.net because we cannot access your Whois contact information.
  • We normally send the transaction IDs to the administrative contact’s email address. For .ca transfers, we send them to the email address on file in your account with us.
  • Transfers normally take five to seven days from the time you authorize them. However, a .ca transfer goes through immediately after you enter the transaction ID, security code, and authorization code, and then click Finish.

If the domain name expired, you have 30 days from the expiration date to transfer it to us. To transfer a .ca domain name to us within that 30-day expiration grace period, contact our Support department for assistance.

Private and Protected Registration

CIRA automatically applies its own private registration to new .ca domain names. Specifically, CIRA limits the personal information that displays in the Whois database for the following legal types:

  • Canadian citizens
  • Permanent residents
  • Legal representatives
  • Aboriginal persons

If you registered a .ca domain name as an individual registrant, you can contact our support department to cancel or re-add private registration.

Renewals

CIRA automatically renews .ca domain names on their expiration dates. If you do not pay for the renewal within 42 days of the expiration date, you can attempt to recover your .ca domain name, and there might be a fee to do so. See Recovering Expired Domain Names for instructions.

Nameserver requirements

You can have a maximum of six nameservers per .ca domain name, and each must have a unique IP address.

Cheap Private Registration FAQ – Domain Registration

What is the difference between public and private domain registration?

Domain Registration – Per our registrar agreement with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the contact and registrant information listed for your domain name must be made public. Using false information is a violation and can lead to the termination of your domain name registration.

We understand most people do not want their personal contact information (name, address, email address, and phone number) made public in the Whois database. That’s why we have offered Private Registration services since 2002.

When you purchase Private Registration services, the Whois database lists a generic name, mailing address, and phone number instead of your personal contact information.

we also create a private unique email address for your domain name — you decide to have any arriving email forwarded, filtered for spam, or not forwarded at all.

Although the listed registrant of your domain name is generic on the Whois database, you retain FULL CONTROL over your domain name. You can:

  • Cancel, sell, or renew your domain name
  • Control the content for your website
  • Set the nameservers for your domain name
  • Update your underlying domain name contact information
  • Resolve any and all disputes involving your domain name

Private Domain Registration provides a variety of benefits! It helps you:

  • Protect your identity
  • Stop domain name-related spam
  • Thwart harassers and stalkers
  • End data mining
  • Maintain personal and family privacy
  • Prevent your domain from being hijacked
  • Shield legitimate entrepreneurial business endeavors
  • Voice political and other First Amendment speech

We do not allow you to use our private domain name services for spamming, violating the law, or engaging in morally objectionable activities. Violating these policies will result in service cancellation.

Can I request a Premium Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificate for a private domain?

Yes, you can request an Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificate for a privately-registered domain name. We need to verify that you control the domain you intend to secure, and EV certificates have strict verification guidelines.

To verify that you control the domain, you must respond to emails sent to the Registrant or Administrative contacts listed in a Whois search for the domain name. Because private registration services block personal email addresses from displaying, many registrars let users forward email received by the proxy address. After you set up email forwarding, contact us to resend the email.

If you have private registration, see Set Email Forwarding for Domains with Privacy to set up email forwarding in your account.

If you cannot configure email forwarding, or you are unable to verify using this method, you must submit a Verified Legal Opinion or a CPA letter indicating your exclusive right to use the domain name on the Internet. See Request an SSL certificate for more information.

You might also need to perform a practical demonstration, such as modifying the domain’s zone file or creating a Web page with a designated code.

How does Business Registration affect Private Registration?

Business Registration works in conjunction with Private Registration (also known as privacy) to keep your personal information private while promoting your business.

Private Registration shields your personal contact information, which is separate from your Business Registration information. Business Registration contains only the information you want to make public, such as business hours, office phone numbers, and fax numbers.

If you want to have both types of registration, you must purchase them separately.

Why do expiring domain names have private Whois contact information?

Our system hides your contact information during your domain name’s expiration period to protect you from harassment. Here’s how the private contact information displays in the Whois database:

Things you should know:

  • If the private contact information already displays for a domain name during expiration, we won’t change it.
  • If you want to transfer the domain name away from us during the auto-renew grace period, we will automatically revert the private contact information to your original registrant information when you request the authorization code.
  • We can revert private Whois information back to your original registrant information at any time.

At this time, we cannot make all expiring TLDs private. We are working to provide this service for all TLDs in the future.
